Application

Disinfectant and fungicide

Glutaraldehyde can effectively kill a variety of microorganisms, so it can be used as a sterilization agent, suitable for disinfection and sterilization of medical equipment and humidity and heat resistant precision instruments, food, livestock enclosures, environmental health, oil mining, cooling water treatment and other sterilization treatment.

Leather tanning agent

Glutaraldehyde is a tanning agent, which can make the product plump and soft, and has the properties of heat resistance, sweat resistance, soap resistance, etc. Another feature of glutaraldehyde as a tanning agent is that it can be compatible with various proportions of mineral tanning agents, acid leaching agents, neutral salts, and has good performance in a wide range of pH.

Protein crosslinking agent

Glutaraldehyde is one of the best protein crosslinking agents, which is characterized by high activity, fast reaction, large binding amount, stable product and strong resistance to boiling water, acids and enzymes. Many biological tissue materials prepared with glutaraldehyde have the advantages of eliminating antigens, reducing rejection reaction and excellent self-compatibility, and can be used for human organ repair.

Other applications

Glutaraldehyde is also used as a film binder for electron microscopy and color picture tubes. In the pharmaceutical industry, it can be used in the production of the central stimulant lobeline hydrochloride, for the treatment of sewage, for the corrosion of water-based metal processing cooling lubricants and as a corrosion inhibitor for copper alloys and iron-based materials in water systems.

How does glutaraldehyde work?

Glutaraldehyde alkaline aqueous solution has good bactericidal effect. When the pH is 7.5~8.5, the strongest effect, can kill the reproduction of bacteria and spores, fungi, viruses, its effect is 2~10 times stronger than formaldehyde.

Glutaraldehyde kills microorganisms mainly through its two active aldehyde groups. Its activity is affected by pH and temperature. Under acidic conditions, glutaraldehyde is hydrolyzed into monohydrate, dihydrate, cyclic hemiacetal and acetal-like polymers, which are in equilibrium with each other. Because only a small amount of glutaraldehyde monomer exists in acidic aqueous solution, its biological activity is poor.

However, under acidic conditions, the polymerization of glutaraldehyde is slower, so acidic glutaraldehyde is more stable and can be stored for a longer time. Under acidic conditions, increasing the temperature can produce more free aldehyde groups, thus improving their biological activity.

Glutaraldehyde has high biological activity under alkaline pH7.5 ~ 8.5 condition, which can kill all microorganisms including spores. Glutaraldehyde can be polymerized into butanolaldehyde type unsaturated polymers under alkaline conditions, and then form higher polymerization forms.

In alkaline aqueous solution, the polymerization of glutaraldehyde is irreversible, and its activity gradually weakens or disappears with the gradual increase of polymers. With the increase of pH and temperature and the extension of storage time, the polymerization of basic glutaraldehyde can be strengthened, thus accelerating the decrease of its activity.
