Butanone oxime, 2-Butanone oxime
Colorless oily liquid. Melting point -29.5°C, boiling point 152-153°C, 59-60°C (2kPa), relative density 0.9232 (20/4°C), refractive index 1.4410. Miscible with alcohol and ether, soluble in 10 parts of water.
Properties
Methyl ethyl ketoxime (MEKO) is a colorless to pale yellow liquid with a mild, characteristic odor. It has a boiling point of approximately 152–153°C at standard atmospheric pressure and a melting point of around -29°C. The compound exhibits a density of 0.92 g/cm³ at 20°C and is miscible with organic solvents such as alcohols, ethers, and ketones, though it has limited solubility in water. Its relatively low vapor pressure (~3 mmHg at 20°C) reflects moderate volatility under ambient conditions.
As an oxime (R₁R₂C=N–OH), MEKO demonstrates weak basicity, enabling it to form salts with acids. It undergoes hydrolysis in acidic or alkaline environments to regenerate methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) and participates in redox reactions due to the labile N–O bond in its structure. The compound is thermally stable under normal conditions but decomposes at temperatures exceeding 200°C, releasing nitrogen oxides. MEKO also acts as a chelating agent, forming stable complexes with transition metals like copper and iron, which underpins its role in corrosion inhibition and catalyst stabilization. Its dual reactivity—combining coordination chemistry and controlled decomposition—makes it versatile in industrial applications.
Application
PU Coatings: MEKO is used in automotive and industrial coatings (e.g., polyurethane finishes).
Adhesives: Found in high-performance adhesives for aerospace and construction (e.g., 3M™ structural adhesives).
Fuel Additives: Incorporated into diesel stabilizers.
Silicone Sealants: Used in Dow Corning® silicone products for electronics and construction.
Role: Inhibits oxidation and corrosion in industrial systems.
Key Uses:
Polymer Industry: Added to polyurethane (PU) coatings and adhesives to prevent discoloration and degradation caused by metal catalysts (e.g., tin compounds).
Fuel and Lubricants: Protects metal surfaces in engines and pipelines by neutralizing reactive metal ions.
Industrial Coolants: Used in closed-loop cooling systems (e.g., HVAC, power plants) to protect copper and steel components.
Metalworking Fluids: Extends tool life by reducing rust formation.
Silicone Production: Acts as a blocking agent for silicone polymers, enabling controlled curing at elevated temperatures.
Pharmaceuticals/Agrochemicals: Precursor for synthesizing heterocyclic compounds (e.g., pesticides, herbicides).
