Caustic soda is a strong corrosive alkali, generally in the form of flakes or particles, easily soluble in water and forming an alkaline solution, and deliquescence, easily absorbing water vapor (deliquescence) and carbon dioxide (deterioration) in the air.

Application

1)Manufacture of chemicals: Sodium hydroxide is one of the important raw materials for the production of polycarbonates, superabsorbent polymers, zeolites, epoxy resins, sodium phosphate, sodium sulfite and a large number of sodium salts.

2) Papermaking: Process used to cook and bleach paper sheets due to its alkaline properties.

Food industry: It can be used as a detergent for containers such as empty bottles and cans, as well as decolorizers and deodorizers; starch processing; preparation of carboxymethyl cellulose; manufacturing of sodium glutamate. It is used as acid neutralizer, and can be used as peeling agent for citrus and peaches.

3)Water treatment: In sewage treatment plants, sodium hydroxide can reduce the hardness of water through a neutralization reaction. Eliminate water hardness; adjust pH value of water; neutralize wastewater; eliminate heavy metal ions in water by precipitation; regeneration of ion exchange resin.

4)Artificial fibers and textiles: In the textile industry, sodium hydroxide is used for final treatment and dyeing of fibers. Main application: mercerized man-made fiber

5)Aluminum smelting: used to process bauxite, which contains alumina, which is the raw material for making aluminum (aluminum is the second most used metal in the world). Sodium hydroxide is also used to produce zinc alloys and zinc ingots.

6)Detergents: For traditional household purposes. The demand for caustic soda for soaps, toilet soaps and other types of washing products still accounts for about 15% of caustic soda. Soap: Making soap is the oldest and most widespread use of caustic soda, where it is used to neutralize fatty acids. Detergents: Sodium hydroxide is used to produce various detergents, and even laundry detergents today are made from large amounts of caustic soda, which is used to neutralize excess oleum after the vulcanization reaction.

7)Bordeaux mixture: Together with copper sulfate, Bordeaux mixture is the main component of Bordeaux mixture.

8)Cosmetics: In cosmetic creams, the saponification of sodium hydroxide and stearic acid acts as an emulsifier to make vanishing cream, shampoo, etc.
