Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is a white or yellowish, granular or powdered, stable, non-toxic water soluble polymer. The main properties of polyvinyl alcohol are determined by the molecular alcoholysis and polymerization degree, and has the following properties: 1. Water soluble: easily soluble in water, insoluble in almost all organic solvents; 2. Viscosity of aqueous solution: the viscosity of PVA aqueous solution changes with the degree of polymerization, temperature and solution concentration; 3. Film formation: PVA aqueous solution is easy to form a film, and its skin film has excellent tensile strength, wear resistance and other physical properties; 4. Hygroscopicity: PVA membrane has low hygroscopicity, and the hygroscopicity changes with temperature is smaller than that of other water-soluble polymers; 5. Application

1 )Binder and adhesive


As a water-soluble polymer, PVA has excellent adhesion, oil resistance, high film strength, good stability, if used in combination with the filler, can increase the initial adhesion and drying speed.


It is a thermoplastic adhesive derived from vinyl acetate monomer polymerization initiated at room temperature, ensuring a fast cure and yielding a durable, tough bonding layer resistant to aging.   Commonly known as white latex or PVAC emulsion, it serves as an environmentally friendly water-based adhesive.


PVA can also be used to make bonding liquid of magnetic core materials, which is suitable for the preparation of magnetic core materials, and has the advantages of strong bonding force, less amount, high embryo formation rate, low ash, stable sintering volatilization and so on. PVA is made into a solution with a certain concentration and viscosity, and sprayed on ferrite magnetic powder and ceramic powder. After forming, it is fired into electronic materials such as magnetic core materials by kiln. During sintering, PVA is smoothly volatilized in the range of 150 ~ 450℃. Using PVA as binder can avoid the phenomenon of fine crack and damage caused by sudden large amount of volatilization in the sintering process, so that the performance and quality of the product can be significantly improved.


2) Dispersant (emulsifying stabilizer)


Polyvinyl alcohol has unique advantages in protecting colloid, dispersing and flocculating. Polyvinyl alcohol is widely used as suspension agent, protective colloid and thickener of vinyl acetate (VAC) or vinyl acetate/acrylate emulsion polymerization, which can effectively reduce the particle size of copolymer.


PVA can also be used as a dispersion stabilizer for PVC suspension polymerization. Ultra-low alcoholysis type PVA and high degree partial alcoholysis type PVA have excellent surface activity and protective colloid properties, and are often used as dispersion stabilizer for PVC suspension polymerization. The selection of appropriate specifications of PVA can greatly optimize the performance of PVC resin. The performance of PVA greatly affects the characteristics of PVC powder. The principles of its use are as follows:


Low viscosity ultra-low alcoholysis PVA has high surface activity, good granulation, fine primary particles, porous finished particles, so the residual monomer removal is easy, good plasticizer absorption, suitable for the production of soft PVC powder.


High viscosity low alcoholysis PVA due to high degree of polymerization, has high protective colloid characteristics, excellent dispersion stability, suitable for the production of soft or hard PVC powder, operating temperature is higher than low viscosity products.


3) Textile


In the textile industry, PVA finds widespread application due to its toughness, wear resistance, adhesion, and compatibility with other slurries.   Specifically used in warp sizing, PVA textile size enhances weaving performance, improves fabric appearance, and maintains stable viscosity even after prolonged heating.


4) Paper Making


PVA is used in the paper industry as a sizing agent on the surface of paper. After sizing the surface of paper with PVA, the quality of paper products can be greatly improved, such as increasing the surface strength of paper products and avoiding the phenomenon of peeling off powder caused by high-speed printing. Improve the dimensional stability of the paper to avoid the phenomenon of curling when coated on one side; Improve the flexural strength and friction strength of paper; Improve the printing adaptability of paper products, reduce the absorption of water and ink on paper; Increase the gloss and smoothness of paper products; Improve paper oil resistance, solvent resistance and drug resistance.


Paper surface sizing is generally implemented on the presser or glue roller, and needs to be used with 20%~100% emulsified paraffin wax, so as not to adhere to the presser or glue roller after gluing. In order to reduce the penetration of the paste in the paper and reduce the waste of the paste, the paper surface can be coated with 5% borax solution and then coated with PVA solution.


In addition, PVA can also be used as a paper coating adhesive to make the pigment adhere to the base paper, for food packaging, no odor. In order to increase the adaptability of the operation and reduce the cost, PVA can use PVAc latex, starch and other pastes at the same time, can also use cheap white soil, talcum powder (neutral or acidic products is better, the proportion should not be too large, so as not to stratify too quickly), PVA and white soil used together, in addition to reduce the cost, can also increase the initial adhesion, reduce the penetration of the paper layer, For rough surface bonding, white soil is very suitable.


5) Building Materials


PVA can be used as an additive for cement and mortar, which can effectively increase the adhesion and fluidity of cement and mortar, slow down the drying speed of cement, increase the adaptability of cement coating, and prevent the cracking of cement coating surface. In addition, polyvinyl alcohol aqueous solution under acidic conditions and formaldehyde condensation polyvinyl formaldehyde has good water resistance, weather resistance, water does not expand, no embittlement, non-toxic and tasteless, low price, can be widely used in building interior and exterior paint, whitewashing processing, caulking, cement yarn adhesive, can also be used as ceramic tile, Mosaic, floor glue.


6) Thin film


PVA film is mainly composed of polyvinyl alcohol, with conventional PE, PP, PVC film incomparable advantages, such as: high transparency, not easy to take static electricity, oil resistance and solvent resistance, good barrier, strong film, easy to print; It can be rapidly denatured, decomposed and degraded into low molecular compounds by natural factors, and has the effect of soil improvement. So it belongs to a new type of environmental protection packaging material.


7) Safety glass, car windshield


Under acidic conditions, PVA solution reacts with aldehydes, and its products have strong water resistance, and have very strong adhesion to hydrophobic substances or void free substances. Butyral and PVA production of acetal products: (PVB), strong adhesion to glass and other substances, in the two layers of glass between a layer of transparent polyvinyl butyral film called safety glass, widely used in car windshield, high-rise building safety glass, bulletproof glass, etc.


8) Fiber


Vylon fiber is a synthetic fiber produced by PVA as raw materials. There are Vylon short fiber, Vylon long fiber and other products, which have the advantages of strong moisture absorption, wear resistance, corrosion resistance, etc. It can be mixed or pure spun with cotton, wool, viscoelastic fiber, and can be used for processing bedding, decorative cloth, canvas, fishing nets, curtains and so on.


PVA high strength and high modulus fiber, is a new functional, special type of Vinylon, with high strength, low elongation, large modulus, acid and alkali resistance, strong weather resistance and other advantages, good comprehensive performance, is widely used in building materials, rubber products, coated cloth, plastic hose and other industries that need higher strength industrial lines, especially in cement and building materials applications, It is recognized as the best alternative to asbestos, is a "green environmental protection" reinforcing material, has a broad market prospects.


PVA water-soluble fiber has water solubility, acid resistance, alkaline resistance, organic solvent resistance and good salt and chemical resistance. It can be dissolved in different water temperatures according to needs. After the waste liquid is treated by activated sludge, it is completely degraded and pollution-free. PVA water-soluble fiber is mainly used as papermaking raw materials, non-woven materials, the production of water-soluble yarn, or mixed with other fibers into high-grade textiles.


9) Iron and Steel Metallurgy


PVA aqueous solution with low concentration is a good quenching agent for steel products, which can solve the problem of poor cooling rate when the conventional quenching agent is used. When quenching steel products, if the use of water quenching, steel cooling speed is too fast, the product strength is high, but easy to crack, easy to crack, short service life; If oil quenching is used, the cooling speed is slow and the hardness of the product is not enough. When partial alcohol hydrolyzed PVA aqueous solution is used as quenching agent, its cooling rate is between water and oil. According to the requirements of product strength and hardness, the optimal cooling rate can be achieved by adjusting the varieties of PVA and adjusting the concentration of PVA aqueous solution. The steel products have high strength and are not easy to crack. The optimal concentration of PVA is generally 0.05-0.30%.


10) Medical treatment and daily chemical treatment


High purity PVA is recognized as a harmless substance to human body, in the field of medical, pharmaceutical, food, can be used as pharmaceutical granulation agent, bandage adhesive, eye drops adhesive, medical hot compress material, immobilized enzyme carrier in food, etc.


11) Agricultural Forestry


PVA has the effect of improving soil structure and can be used as soil conditioner in agriculture. Due to the strong water absorption of PVA, the use of PVA can increase the soil agglomeration, increase air permeability, water retention, suitable for desert soil modification.


12) PVA sponge
