Sodium thiocyanate is a white rhombic crystal or powder. The relative density is 1.735g/cm3. Melting point 287℃. It is easily deliqued in air and produces toxic gas when it meets acid. Soluble in water, ethanol, acetone and other solvents.
Application
In organic synthesis, sodium thiocyanate is used to convert halogenated hydrocarbons into the corresponding thiocyanates.
In other applications, sodium thiocyanate is used as a solvent for drawing polyacrylonitrile fibres, as a reagent for chemical analysis, as a developer for colour film, as a defoliant for certain plants, and as an herbicide for airport roads. It is also used in pharmaceuticals, printing and dyeing, rubber treatment, black nickel plating and the manufacture of artificial mustard oil.
Construction aspect, for building admixture in the sodium thiocyanate early strength agent, mixed thiocyanate admixture can shorten the setting time of concrete, improve the early strength, therefore used in winter concreting, antifreeze and sprayed concrete components.
